Are you entering the Duct Tape Prom Contest? Yes? Then, OK, matching your date is cool. If you answered this question, "No," then all we're saying is reconsider the idea of matching. (BTW, you really must check out the Stuck At Prom Contest entries received last year. They're quite amazing.)
Gone are the days of matching mandates by the prom police: 'I decree that the color of the dress must be exact in tone and shade to that of the color of the tie!' Now, it's less about matching and more about coordinating your looks so that the overall style is cohesive, unified, and togetherish.
Check with your date first to find out his thoughts on matching and/or coordinating. It's still totally cool if your date wants to wear a pale pink tie and vest to match your gorgeous pale pink gown, but it's not going to break any prom fashion laws if he's not down with it.
Simplify. Maybe instead of matching, just make sure you get him a boutoinierre (and he gets you a corsage) that matches your dress. That's subtle, yet still makes the point that you two came to prom together.
If your date is into wearing color (see photo above: burgundy pants and teal shirt), then a good choice for you could be a neutral color dress, such as blush, off-white, champagne, or a pale shade of blue or green.
We are also super into the idea of matching the shirt to the dress, and keeping the suit or tux monotone, like dark grey, black, or navy. Hot!
But, if your dress is a color that he is flat out not going to wear anywhere in his look, then just do your best to be your adorable you anyway. As long as you're both smiling, you'll match just perfectly.
