Ask Fashion Girl - Prom Edition

Gwen_stefani_curly_updo_3 Dear Fashion Girl,

I need help!  I have medium-length hair and I want to wear it curly.  How do you think I should put it up for Prom?

Alicia_keys_curly_updo
Thanks,
Charmaine

Dear Charmaine,

You are so in luck!  The messy updo is a) insanely chic, b) a red carpet fave for stars like Eva Mendes, Alicia Keys, and Vanessa Hudgens, and c) super-easy to achieve.

Eva_mendes_curly_updo There are tons of variations for this style, but they all start with a simple ponytail.  If you've already got curly hair then you're ready to start, if not, use a medium-barreled curling iron to create spirals or waves (whichever you prefer).  Here are the simple steps:Eva_longoria_curly_updo

1. Pull your hair into a loose ponytail.  And don't worry about getting every single strand into the ponytail holder - a few stray tendrils are what make the look so stunning!
2. Use bobby pins to randomly pin sections of hair into a chignon and you're done!

Emmy_rossum_curly_updoNow here's where the variation comes in:

  • Leave as much or as little of your hair out of the ponytail as you want.  You can always pin back pieces if you feel you've left too much out.

Rachel_mcadams_curly_updo_4

  • You can part your hair one either side, right down the middle, or just pull it straight back into the ponytail.
  • Your ponytail can be as low or as high as you want.  You can even pull it to one side.
  • Add a sparkly headband, colorful flower, sequined hair pins or anything else you want to make the look even more festive.
  • Add braids or twists to the front (just one or two) for a more textured look.

Try different variations before the big night to see which one you love best.  And for more gorgeous Prom updos go here.  Have a great Prom!  --Angel

Ask Fashion Girl - Prom Edition

Katie_holmes Dear Fashion Girl -

How should I style my short hair?

-KRihanna

I get a ton of questions about different hairstyles to try for Prom and this is probably the most common. Some of the world's most glamorous woman are donning short 'dos these days, so you're in good company!  Whether you've got choppy locks like songstress Rihanna or a sleek bob a la Katie Holmes, there's a Prom-perfect style for you! --Angel

Wavy_baby_3   Wavy Baby - This style is so 1920s-chic! Here's how to get it:

1. Curl hair with a medium- or large-barreled curling iron, making sure you curl each piece in the same direction.

2. Rub pomade between palms and comb through hair with fingers.

3. Add a cute headband or flower and you're ready to go!

Standing Ovation - Try this bold hair style to really stand out at Prom! Just follow these steps:Standing_ovation

1. Straighten 1-inch sections of hair with a flat iron until entire Mohawk is straight.

2. Use your fingers to fan out the Mohawk and pull a few pieces down in front to create bangs. Make your hair stand up or out or however you want it - just have fun with it!

3. Apply pomade as needed to create spiky pieces.

4. Brush down the sides of the Mohawk. If your hair is not shaved on the sides you can use pomade and gel to spike the sides up or slick them back to create a Mohawk look.  Add a flower or bow to sweeten it up!

Pinwheels Pinwheels - This is an insanely pretty updo for short hair that's also incredibly easy! Here's what you do:

1. Start with smooth, dry hair, then use a medium-barreled curling iron to curl 1-inch sections of your hair until your entire head is complete.

2. Loosely pin the curls to your head, making as big or as little rolls as you desire.

3. Add flowers, feathers, fun barrettes or whatever you like to garnish your 'do!Twist_and_turn

Twist and Turn - This style takes no effort at all to achieve but looks deeply gorgeous! For a showstopping style just twist sections of your hair and lightly pin to your head. Be creative and make the twist as tight or loose, as big or as little as you like!

Perfect Plaits - Girlish French braids are perfectly charming for Prom. Here's howPerfect_plaits you can pull it off:

1. Start with hair parted slightly off-center.

2. Begin French braiding one side, making sure to include only the hair in front. Then repeat with the opposite side. You can use an elastic to hold the first braid while you do the second one.

3. Pull both braids to the back of your head and wrap together with a hair elastic.  You can add barrettes, flowers or feathers to decorate!

You'll end up with soft, shiny, silky straight hair - no flat iron needed!  It's a favorite of FIDM Merchandise Product Development Student Lauren Conrad, no doubt for its super light formula, uber-conditioning panthenol, and invigorating orange. We love it because you get salon results for a mere five bucks!

Ask Fashion Girl - Prom Edition

Our beloved Fashion Girl is armed and ready to answer any Prom question you may have!  Here's a question from Dee in California:

What kinds of up-dos are in for Prom for really curly hair?

Vanessa_hudgens This year, up-dos are getting undone (think messy chignons and piece-y side-swept ponytails) and gorgeous curls are the perfect texture for the season's deeply fabulous styles.

To achieve the look, simply pull your hair into a relaxed ponytail (at the back, crown or side of your head) then start randomly pinning curls to secure them in place.  You can pin every last curl to create a chignon, or leave a few curls out, like Vanessa Hudgens.  And of course you can spice up the look by pinning flowers, feathers or even netting for a dash of decorative color; or add a rhinestone-covered headband for sparkle!

Take a cue from two of our favorite designers for a dramatic, red carpet-worthy Prom up-do that could rival Hollywood's brightest starlets!

For his Spring 2008 show, Yves Saint Laurent piled curls on top of the models' heads and secured with pins, leaving rockabilly-style bangs to hang over their eyes.  This is so simple to do and all you need is hair pins to keep your hair in place.  For added flair, pin flowers, feathers, or even netting into your hair for decorative color.
Yves_saint_laurent_curly_hairYves_saint_laurent_curly_hair2

It was all about romance at Philip Lim's Spring 2008 show.  Curly-haired models had their tendrils pulled back into a loose ponytail and tucked under at the nape of the neck, with longer layers left out in front.
